More than 1,000 cheer on their alma mater at combined AOA/AOSA Meeting
DALLAS – (July 1, 2003) – One of the most anticipated events of this year’s 106th Annual American Optometric Association (AOA) Congress and 33rd Annual American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) meeting was Friday’s Varilux® Optometry Super Bowl XII. A record crowd of more than 1,000 turned out to support the 19 schools and colleges of optometry through questions like: What is the vertical imbalance 7 mm below the optical centers of the following lenses: OD +3.00 -1.25 X90 OS +200 -1.00 X180? The Answer: 1.4 Prism Diopters.

Mike Monson of Southern College of Optometry is this year’s Varilux® Optometry Super Bowl champion marking the first time SCO has won this competition. Monson received $1,000 cash courtesy of Essilor of America. Roger Paez from Inter-American University in Puerto Rico placed second and Lisa Baloian from the University of California at Berkley placed third.

This year’s panel of judges were Dr. Irv Borish, Dr. Pat Cummings, president of AOA, Dr. Wes Pitman, vice president of AOA, Dr. David Loshen, former president of ASCO and dean of NOVA Southeaster and Dr. Jim Thimons.
