I am a LO and have used the OptiBoard for viewing purposes only in the past. I am in a Master's program and I am using the optical industry in a project. I am looking for information on optical trends and present details on percentages of lens materials used, lens types used and future projections. I have looked through some trade magazines but did not see the info I was looking for. Please advise me where i can get this information. Thanks in advance for any help.

Jobson publishers have released a ton of percentage information in 20/20 Magazine.

I will look for their website tomorrow.

With apologies to Karlen and Jobson...

They gather and SELL information on the industry assembled thru "surveys" of the 3 O's, most of which are not scientifically valid samplings. However, I do believe their trends to be projectable (i.e. the "errors" are consistant).

The OLA does not have any published data.
The OMA (Optical Manufacturers Association), recently morphed into VCA (Vision Council of America), does have the information you are requesting as reported by members (probably a little cheating here but still the closest we have to good data) but it is also confidential. Unfortunately, their data does not include imported product that goes around their distribution. You might try contacting them to see if they would release the info under certain confidentiality agreements.

Lastly, you might call some of the lens manufacturers and see if some sympathetic marketing person might be willing to share info.

With apologies to Jim...some back issues of both Vision Monday and 20/20 have this data in them. I'm not sure which issues, though. Maybe some OptiBoarders out there remember which months this year? It's true we sell it, too, but if you look into it through the mags I'm sure you'll find useful free info as well. I forgot to mention that 20/20's web site is www.2020mag.com.
