    Frame polishing compound

Hello, Opti-folks. I am converting an old hand wheel into a frame buffing thing. I have the polishing/buffing pad. What kind of compound do I need for buffing a chalky plastic frame with? Can I get it from a hardware or automotive retailer? Any tips or tricks?
    Thank you in advance. haliopt.

It's been my experience you won't be able to remove the "chalky" or white residue with buff/polish wheel alone... maybe if only a tiny bit exists but you'll have much better end result if you use wet/dry sandpaper start with 600 grit then finish off with 1500 grit to remove residue and any light scratches or scuffs on the plastic.

Regarding what compound to use? I have used (for years) jewelers rouge (RED compound) to start off with and then finish out with polishing (WHITE) compound to achieve a hi lustre gloss finish. Tedious, detailed and lots of patience will yield results. Use separate pads for each compound and don't bear down too hard or long or you will burn the frame and mess up your pad.

    Have fun.

Did this for a repeat patient who has used the same frame for several prescriptions. She loved them, and besides the look, they were fine. She talked out loud about how poor the finish was looking. They looked like total garbage. Got them back to perfect lustre with a felt wheel, white compound, and tons of patience.

She didn't notice. Not a word.

    That's the last time...

My treatment for old "chalky white" frames was to put acetone on a paper towel and rub the frame. It does take a little bit of art to do it right.

Let them sit in a plastic bag, coat with vaseline
a few days later, almost like new....most zyl frames are organic base and love other carbon chains
