    Temple sleeves for pain?

I have a patient that absolutely loves his new Ray Ban ORX8901's, but they hurt his ears. The temples have such a bow curve to them (and a knife-edge) that they dig into the top of the shell of his ear rather than riding down in the ear crease. We put heat shrink tubing on the temples and that fixed the problem. However, this temporary fix looks horrible on a $250 frame. Any ideas or products out there that would give him better comfort? And yes, we already tried tightening the frame to reduce the bowing. It ended up squeezing his head too much.

If they are hurting the top of his ears its because there isn't enough pressure against the side of his skull and all of the weight is laying on top of his ears, and rubbing back and forth too much.

Curve them along his skull a little more snugly and the weight distribution on top of his ears will dissapear. If the frame is actually knife edge sharp that is most certainly a defect. If you don't want to exchange it sand it down and finish on a polish wheel to make it better.

All else fails, standard heat shrink tubing is usually a simple fix.

I don't know of a good looking solution. I use silicone temple covers with good success. Available from Hilco. I actually had a now defuct supplier who had various sizes at a great price and am dreading when I run out of them.

Is it me or are frame manufacturers in a race to make thin temple tips that make this issue way more common than in the past? Or Am I just not remembering correctly?

Don't get me started on those who are putting the smallest cheapest hard nose pads on large metal frames! ~~~cough [BCBG] cough!!!

Thank you all for your suggestions. We ended up buying some tighter-fitting heat shrink. The electrical stuff worked better than the optical grade. We stretched the black tubing diameter to fit over the temple end and then shrunk two tubes over each other to add enough bulk to fatten up the temple edge. The black looked like part of the frame design and he is still happy weeks later!
