Hi John. Thank you for the reply. I appreciate your effort.

BTW--I have a new staffer. I am having her and and my pretest tech have a look at your 4 videos on Lensometry, as well as the intro to edging, and the vid on "size matters" i.e. what not to choose. We will look forward to seeing your future vids on Bifocals and progressives.

    Thank you again.

Here is this week's installment in our ongoing series, Learn the Lensmeter.
Still to come, progressives, recognizing vertical imbalance and finishing layout work.

Any suggestions for best websites that provide resources for lens products? Experiences with products that are best for patients?

Follow social media sites like this and all the FB ones too.

People are pretty open about products they like.

Of course I would encourage you to give our Laramy-K lenses a try - you will not be sorry you did!

It's pretty cool. These are some of the most highly polished videos for learning. I wonder how deep it will go though. Martin's tilt formula? Mikwitz theorem? Effective power? exciting!

    Jaketull,

    THANKS!

All things in time - we are just getting started with the foundation work and then building up.

I do dig into tilt & effective power in great detail on the OpticianWorks website.

One thing that I would really like to see is an advanced edging lesson wherein you take 0.5 base -7.00 and apply the correct bevel and maybe even step the backside of the nasal and temporal a bit. I always though it would be cool to start with a zyl frame with -7.00 OU, one side cut properly and the otherside cut on auto (with the front being all warped and flattened out) and be like "hey, these are the same lenses, but why did they come out different ways?"

Because, I swear to god, if another "lab-tech" is like "we ain't got no choice, the lens is just flat", I going to rage-quit.

    PLEASE, MAKE THEM UNDERSTAND!!!

Its never going to get better at wholesale labs, it just won't. Those days are long gone. It is why there are certain frame lens combos that I just edge in house, even though my lab is getting the "edging fee" from the insurance company - because I refuse to let out frames and lenses that make my business look bad. If I knew another way I would do it.

Sure there are always "specialty" departments that do great things with lenses, but for your average job I just think that ship has sailed, but it makes those who can produce superior work in house all the more valuable.

Ha! no no no, I'm talking about my on-site guys! They just stick the lenses there on auto and can't figure out what I'm saying when i show them how to edge properly. They'll be like "oh yeah, I get it" and then I'll come back a week later to jacked up frames, lenses not flush-mounted, obscene amounts of pressure on the lens, holes drilled at all kinds of screwed up angles.

I just want John to make a video so that I don't get accused of looking like a know-it-all.

That will depend on which edger we get on loan next.

If it is capable I'll be glad to shoot a how-to video.

No. No no no no. **** that. You need to break into a store that has a top notch santinelli and film this episode. People are counting on you. There are patients that are sending thousands of dollars on eyewear and yet their job is being processed by a lab monkey. You're the "neo" bro. Break into that shop! Take the staff hostage! All in the name of thoughtful/capable edging.

    Good luck to you.

These lenses are on order and the new edger is getting dialed in today.

Should have something for you by August.

Jaketull, Lenses just arrived. Still learning my way around the edger so give me some time to get it all down on video and edited. This is easy- pleasy for the LEX-1200!

One of the questions in our ABO exam test prep question bank seems to give people trouble. This week I run through that question on the whiteboard. Next week - back to the lensmeter.
