    Maui Jim Ophthalmic

We just received our Maui Jim ophthalmic line at my store. Is anyone else on here carrying the product? What do you think about it? I dislike the nose pads on most of the plastic frames but overall it seems to be good quality.

    Location: Surrey BC, Canada.

Pretty soon Maui Jim will probably make you carry 24 of those, too, in addition to the 72 sunglasses.

Hmmm, not released here yet but there is talk. We will probably try them in our busiest location and go from there. I find this move interesting because they are so known for their lens quality. The sun frames are fine, but style is a new endeavor.

    Aaaaannnnnnnnddddd.....

Just wait for the quality of the entire brand to fall off a cliff - ala RB, Oakley, Smith et al. What a terrible move on MJ's part.

Interesting. Our rep was in not too long ago and no mention of it. I had no idea this was coming!

Except MJ is nothing like RB or Oakley. Remember- they cut out EssiLux instead of selling out. Fortunately that have enough product loyalty to still make it without.

TMK, unless they changed, they use Shamir Attitude, thus, Esilux. ( I'm willing to be corrected..)

Remember, RB, Oakley and Smith used to be nothing like they are now as well. BEFORE they sold out, and cheapened their brands to such amazingly low levels. Sadly, the rush for every last possible dollar ends up destroying what were once amazing products. If MJ seriously pursues this, I can't see them being any different.

Who said that MJ have good quality frames?
I find them just acceptable! I also want to see how well they will do without Essilux selling their line!

You have it backwards? Luxellor kicked out Maui Jim for Costa (they own now)

Maui Jim has also allowed the internet to ruin a brand. We carry 1/3 of what we used to carry and am looking to build up a legacy brand for the independents while not allowing it to be internettted.
    Stay tuned for more details.

I think RB and REvo are the replacement for MJ. Costa is too special in the lenses and to garbage in the frames...

RB as a replacement for Maui? puhlease.

My Maui rep literally left my office 20 mins ago with no mention of an ophthalmic collection (i've heard of its existence previously but have yet to see or hear anything official.)

Opening order was 60 pieces, and 12 rimless.

They have cut out shamir long ago. My rep says they have their own independent lens manufacturing lab.

I don't believe they got into lens design/manufacturing. They do have their own lab, but they must buy lenses from someone. Too bad if not Shamir, at least that made me confident in the technnology. If they are buying from some unnamed manufacturer, or even worse actually DID get into lens manufacturing, then I fear for the lens quality.

Unfortunately every third customer asking for RB and maybe one out of 100 for MJ...

Everyone knows rayban, it's been marketed so well. Throw a Maui Jim polarized for polarized against Rayban and give to your patient and see what they like better.

RayBan RoX uses KbCO with an Essilor wrap FF design. MJ uses Younger, not sure who's FF design they use, perhaps IOT based on the Younger lenses. Both are great lenses. MJ's thin films, IMO, beats RayBan thin films, and that is where the difference is.
Frames, however, is where RayBan beats out MJ. Frame quality, style and comfort of MJ leaves a lot to be desired. LuX, with RB, Revo and Oakley, beats MJ hands down when it comes to frames.
Personally, I would lean towards WileyX for performance sun.

    Now Clearvision has Revo.

    We just don't sell plano.

Do you give your CL patients incentives to buy from you? Do you mention the need in the exam room? They're buying them somewhere.

Just check out your local Costco Optical for comparable product at 1/2 the price you can sell for!!!
