The reps keep telling me you should turn inventory 4 times a year, thus by their math your shop should have a quarter as many frames as you sell in a year. That seems very low to me, our office sells 1200 frames a year and that would mean I should only carry 300 frames? Granted we have way too many with about 1100 frames, but we like having a lot of selection, and 200 or so are inexpensive frames I got good bulk order pricing on so really I'm about 900 premium frames. I still run into selection issues.

I agree with Danliv, We have about 1200 frames but we sell about 3200 to 3300 a year. I do carry about 200 sunglasses. I am a strong believer in you have to have it to sell it. very rarely do we have someone leave because they can't find something, and if they do leave, its more for their indecisiveness, which they can go somewhere else.

Recently I visited my friends shop, he has around 500 plus frames with unique designs in his shop. I was highly impressed with his shop. He also have his online store, which you can view online over the web. Online Stores are the best places to buy both prescription designer eyeglasses, and sunglasses, because more and more people are finding it convenient buying online.

    Thanks for that, Donna.

I won't be able to back this up with formulae, but I once did a calculation that a typical optometry practice should have minimum 5%/ maximum 10% of gross sales in inventory value.

    I thought that was interesting.

So, say the practice does the following:
    small: 1/4 mil
    medium: 1/2 mil
    large: 1 mil

    The inventory values are roughly
    small: 12,500 to 25,000
    medium: 25,000 to 50,000
    large: 50,000 to 100,000

Obviously it'd be tough to run a full-scope dispensary on 12K, and big practices should benefit from economy of scale and NOT have 100K in inventory. Ergo small practices should rely on the high figure and large practices the low figure and medium practices can have all they want.

We have 700-800 on display with a back stock of around 200.
Have I told you today how much I hate poly?
