    phoropter cleaning

we have a couple of Burton photopters that need cleaned and I'm looking for suggestions on reasonably priced companies. Walman Instruments wanted to charge us $675 because it isn't a Reichert, Marco, or Topcon model which seems absolutely ridiculous for a cleaning. Any success with any other companies? We are located in Michigan, so something in the Midwest would be the best.

Phoropter cleaning and service are two different things.
Cleaning the lenses is only part of the job.
The instrument regardless of the manufacture should be dismantled and the moving parts stripped of old lubricant, cleaned and re lubricated.
When you turn the axis knob on a Phoropter you are revolving eight lenses and the Jackson cross cylinder as well a few gears in between. It is easy to get cylinder banks messed up.
Remarkably the newer Ultramatic Phoropter with two lenses in the front loupe is easier to service then the older model with three lenses in the loupe, a rare example of something being actually "new and improved"

I have tried to post videos of Old Shep doing stuff like this on YouTube but he is the system administrator of the home computer and has denied my requests to post videos of him on line.

I had to sneak out to the Library to post this.

David, you can bank on anything that I post on OptiBoard. I'm not like all the others.

It is possible to clean lenses inside a phoroptor using no instrumentation other than standard "Q-tips" and a lens/glass cleaner solution. The method is to expose individual lenses in the phoroptor opening, so they can be cleaned on both sides. On both the right and left side of the AO/Reichert/Leica Ultramatic Rx Master phoroptor.

For the best most detailed way to clean a phoropter it should be carefully disassembled, all lens surfaces cleaned front and back, and as mentioned above, old lubricant removed and replaced, and any lint type debris removed. It requires the skills of someone with moderate mechanical skills. For quick touchups, I find that a cotton tip applicator (CTA) on wooden sticks, like used in the exam room, can be very useful. I use a microcloth and lightly spritz it with lens cleaner, then drape one corner over the CTA. Backlight the lens banks with the instrument stand light to help help highlight as you do your touchup. About once a year a full disassembly, cleaning, & change of lubrication should ideally be done. The tensioning of some of the lens wheels can also be adjusted at that time.
