"How wide is the intermediate area"?

Had a patient asking the specific measurements of the various progressive lenses. Was only concerned about the width of the intermediate area.

Have you ever been asked this question and how did you respond?

What I generally tell patients is that PALs are great for "general purpose" wear. If they have specific intermediate needs, I will steer them towards a dedicated computer/occupational PAL. Of course, this depends on what they do for a living/hobby and what they need their glasses for. That is what lifestyle questions are for. There really is no "one size fits all" PAL, regardless of what your Rep says.

About 3mm to 5mm, +2.00 add, at 50% power, within .50 DC limits.

Progressive addition lenses—matching the specific lens to patient needs.

Lightbulb Design your own custom design and then you will know and be able to measure.

LenSync is about to release the ability to design your own lenses and show the effects to the consumer in real-time. This is the future of lenses and LenSync is close to launching it to the ECP from independent labs. Look for it to be released by Vision Expo East with beta testers starting in January 2017.

I have shown this to a few people on Optiboard , the LenSync platform is used to determine in-front of the client what lens emphasis they want. You can them show them the results and thickness from their choice.

I really depends on the RX, especially with a digital lens, but even traditional lenses will be effected by frame measurements, pd, oc, and power. If you use Shamir you can at least tell them the amount of intermediate and near (given a particular Seg) vertically with a fixed corridor.

Other than that just talk to them and see what they ultimately want their glasses to do. Sometimes those needs mean multiple pairs. See what he is trying to actually ask by wanting to know the measurements.

I have never had anyone ask how wide the intermediate is. However, we do steer the majority of our PAL wearers to an office lens as a second pair so they do not need to worry about that.
