What do you consider innovations in polycarbonate?

Just curious as to what you may feel has contributed to the overall success of polycarbonate lens designs. I am preparing for a class at VEE and would like your input.

I can remember when this product was introduced and the reluctance to use it. Getting older, huh?:)

    Bev,

I remember back in the late 80's customers coming in asking about this new featherweate lens, (lenscrafter). They, lenscrafters in the late 80's did mass advertisement about this material. I think becuae of this, people were asking for it, thus we begin selling more. Then there was a law suit about the same time in the 80's that got national attention. From this we in our office began haveing ever customer sign a form if they declined Poly. Becuse of this "right to know" issue more poeple started to buy. I don't think it becaue popular becaue of a great lens, but becuse we are all afraid of being sued!

I would have to say poly fills an increasing demand for thinner, lighter (especially lighter) lenses for midrange powers at a reasonable price point.

More and more customers are purchasing titanium, stainless steel and drill mounted frames. These customers are looking to take as much weight off of their glasses as possible. For the average low to mid power prescription, 1.60 and 1.66/1.67 may be overkill and are expensive.

Aspheric polycarbonate has made a great impact in this area as well. You can fill an Rx up a +4.00 and make a very cosmetically appealing product by using aspheric polycarbonate as a lens choice.
