    Skunk Smell on Glasses

Ok so I live in a relatively rural area and have seen some things, but this is a first. I had a patient come in who had been sprayed in the face by a skunk. So the most common solution that I have found online is a combination of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. I am unsure of the material of the glasses as they did not come from us. I would rather not look up the MSDS on every material in hopes of finding the right one but will do that if necessary. I am hoping someone else has run into this and if so what you used to get rid of the smell. I would appreciate any help.

Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, & Dawn. Should work just fine. You just need the oxygen radicals to bust the sulfur compounds that comes from the skunk spray. The Dawn will then capture the broken compounds and pull them away. If OTC pharmacy H2O2 doesn't work, you may need to up your game by adding some Oxyclean to it, since that will create alot more oxygen radicals. If that fails, well, I don't know what to tell you. None of that should be strong enough to damage the frame nor the lenses, assuming they are decent quality. If the frames is some crap plastic, well, oxygen radicals could leave it blotchy, because they will attack the pigment in the plastic if they can get at it. But, in that case, the plastic was garbage to start with. Any decent frame should be able to resist a low concentration of reactive oxygen.

The old tomato juice thing doesn't actually work. It works on the principle of olfactory fatigue and masking. So, all you end up with is a pair of glasses that smell like a skunk that was stewed in tomatoes.

New pair of glasses. Keep the smelly ones outside until the odor dissipates and now they have a spare pair!

Up until a few years ago I had a plastic job tray that suffered smoke and water damage back in an office fire in 1972. When I finally threw it out in 2012 you could still smell the smoke. I saved it in a plastic Ziploc bag and sniffed it once in a while as a reminder of "the good old days."

    So, lots of luck!

I had a patient who's glasses got sprayed by skunk. Nothing took the smell out. Good luck!
What is reality but a concept unique to each of us? Can anything be classed as real when our perceptions differ greatly on so many things? Just because we see something a particular way does not make it so.

Well we tried rubbing alcohol and it worked pretty good but not completely. She didn't originally get them from us so I didn't want to risk any extreme methods. She is in town helping her elderly parents and took one for the team trying to get rid of the skunk. Live and learn I suppose haha.

HIJACK ALERT--- I believe skunks are about -10.00 myopes. Now you know why they get run over so often. All they "see" is a ball of light getting brighter.

Perhaps the results of bad apple sauce and some strange, Woodland Heaven's Gate cult suicide pact. Unfortunately, that bright light doesn't belong to Hale-Bopp but the head lights of Big Jim's Wrecking and Towing's Ford F550.
