SLOATSBURG - Warby Parker, which produces designer eyewear, will create 128 jobs over the next five years in a brand-new 34,000-square-foot lab in Sloatsburg, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer's office announced Wednesday.

The new $15 million optical lab — where the company will primarily perform lens finishing — will be Warby Parker's first expansion into the region. The company will covert an existing building at 150 Route 17 into the lab, which is across the street from Auntie El's Farm Market.

    Speak of the devil....

No grudge against the guy doing the best he can for his constituency, but his obedience to this ambitious 'distruptor' of eye care puts him at odds with the proper practice of Optometry.

So the debate is 'minimal health care standards' versus the retort of 'Optometry is insincerely overstating the public health risks of DIY specs.'

Will Optometry win that debate in the arena that matters?

The NIH was mentioned early in the thread. Is there some way to engineer clinical studies proving our point? Can docs at least document the anecdotes of DIYs they end up treating? I wonder if the AOA can mobilize some persuasive science to cut through popular default economic skepticism and Win The Argument.
Bringing my AOA flag to the stadium...hope the team shows up for the game, too.

I won't impugn the Hon. Charles Schumer other than to wonder what he personally gets out of the deal.

Well, bringing 128 jobs into the area is worth a lot more than a few pairs of glasses. There might just be some tax money coming into the State coffers. Isn't that the reason we elect these pin heads.

Does the company currently not perform lens finishing? Are they actually creating 128 jobs or simply relocating jobs from somewhere else? If this results in the elimination of 128 jobs from Essilor labs then I would probably applaud this move.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that Warby Parker, which produces its own line of affordable designer eyewear, will create 128 jobs over the next five years in a new 34,000-square-foot optical lab in Sloatsburg, Rockland County. Outfitted for the assembly of glasses and the finishing of prescription lenses, this is the first optical lab Warby Parker will fully own, and its first expansion into the Mid-Hudson Region. The Manhattan-based company will also retain more than 250 jobs at its New York City headquarters as well as an additional 130 jobs at New York retail locations.

“Since day one we’ve worked hard to provide our customers with the best shopping experience possible. As a vertically integrated brand, opening our own lab is the next step in continuing to provide remarkable customer experiences,” said Warby Parker co-Founder and co-CEO Neil Blumenthal. “And we couldn’t be more excited to open this lab in our own backyard and bring even more jobs to the state we call home.”

Not "new" jobs, just those lost to WP doing its own work, and over 5 years. (Lol) A trader Joe's or other supermarket would create that many jobs in 3 months, not 5 years. The NY way, 1.3 million tax dollars to stop the exodus, not create new.

Right. Stupid government meddling in the economy.

    You'd think they'd learn.

But...if Parby Warker becomes big like 1-800 in Utah, well, look out NY! All those revenues from all that profit...

(Wait, is 1-800 profitable and paying taxes, yet?. Nevermind.)

It is more that some individuals in government, that use and propose some help programs for their own advancement in politics.

That proves that they have well learned.
