    Safety Glasses Ontario question

    Hello Canadians,

Just a quick question. I know with safety glasses that the frames have to be ansi certified and show the markings on the frame, but do the lenses have to have the safety monogram aswell? We also monogram our safety lenses here but we had a patient come in with a safety job from another optical that had the safety markings on the frame but no monogram on the lenses and he thought he was ripped off. If you guys have any info on this that would be great.

Frames, both lenses and side shields in the USA and Canada must be marked. As I understand the EU has a similar requirement.

Absolutely yes - along with each frame component marking, the lenses must bear the lab's etching, otherwise it is not considered to be CSA compliant. Also, just for clarification, there is no such thing as CSA 'certified' in Canada on Rx safety eyewear, only CSA 'compliant'.

CSA 'certification' can only be done on mass produced plano safety eyewear.

Or you can do what Nikon does and just put lenses in to minimum thickness and tell their customer that's all their doing and it's not CSA approved

If the wearer has a serious eye injury and prove the lab manufacturer was at fault, this will make a lawyer very happy. Liability is a game of Russian roulette...eventually you get the short end of the stick.
