When labs send a clear lens with AR on one side it is DEFECTIVE (which happens with somewhat alarming repetition at times). There's no reason to make a clear lens that way. But on a polar SUN lens for example, you DO want less light entering from the front side - hence the backside applied to the backside only.
It depends on the use case. What he was saying was that ar both sides would be better for this situation.
There is no case where backside AR shouldn't be applied. Its just a question of what coating to use on the front...
