I'm a foregner, can someone explain to me what is the VSP?

I've been reading here about some changes and that lenses are devided into categories and things like that and I am confused.
    1) what is the VSP?
    2) What is the catogories and what do they mean?
    3) why are some looking for lenses that are not on the vsp?

    Thanks a lot!

    1) VSP stands for Vision Service Plan. It's an American Insurance company that offers coverage for routine vision exams, glasses, and contact lenses (they also offer some plans that "subsidize" LASIK). In the US, medical insurance companies generally do not cover routine vision expenses such as yearly eye exams and glasses; VSP is one company that gives people routine eye coverage.

    2) When we talk about categories, we are talking about the code that VSP gives progressive lenses. Lenses are ranked by letters in the following ascending order: K, J, F, O, N (K being low-end and N being high-end). The category of the lens dictates what the patient pays as a "copay" as well as what the practice receives as a payout from VSP.

    3) When you use a lens that is not coded by VSP and not listed on their product list, the office gets to keep more of the profits from the lens sale. If you are using a non-listed lens, you dictate the lens price and get to keep more of the profits. The increased revenue from using a non-listed lens more than makes up for the payout that the insurance would give you for a covered lens. This is why practices want a non-covered lens.
