Awesome! One more thing I get to blame my parents for. :)
Interesting perception now that its been mentioned. My wife is the first of 5 kids and a minus 10 and the only one that needs glasses. Her folks only use readers. Her other siblings are emerging presbyopes. Wonder what made her so special?
I am the first born and my Rx is roughly -4.00 OU, my wife is a first born in her family and she is roughly a -8.00 OU (her Rx is a little jumpy right now due to pregnancy) which means our 2 year old daughter is royally screwed when its time for her glasses.
Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity
First born, was slightly hyperopic when I was a kid. Never developed any sign of myopia. My younger sister was slightly myopic in childhood though.
I have 4 siblings, and we did not follow the pattern either.
I was born od +4.50 os plano, my oldest is slightly hyperopic, second has perfect vision, my daughter is +3.00 both eyes. But I'm exotropic od- as is my oldest and my youngest.
I'm the seventh of eight and by far the most myopic.

Genetics are pretty strong (the apple doesn't fall far from the tree), but environment is also a strong mediator in refractive error development. And the result is more like flipping a coin. Each flip is 50/50 chance of heads or tails. But your mileage may vary. Sometimes you get 8 heads in a row, even though the odds are against it.
