    Kappa edger bogging

I have an old KAPPA EDGER which is used as a cribber. During the roughing cycle the lens will drop down..start cutting then start bouncing, twist and basically destory the lens. Motor seems to be operating @ normal speed, clap pressure is good and all sensors check fine with no error meesage from machine. Any help to resolve appreciated

New cutter or old cutter? Check the amperage on the motor during spin up, then during the roughing cycle.

If I recall correctly the Kappa just pretty much drops the lens onto the wheel and lets it cut down until its small enough in whatever dimension to re-unite the lens carriage with the part that goes up and down. As the lens clamp rotates it makes and breaks contact with the 'up and down mechanism' (I really wish I could remember the proper name) The machine knows its done roughing when it stops breaking contact.

Since there isn't really much controlling how hard the lens contacts the wheel I would assume there is a problem with the rotation of the lens clamp, or perhaps the cutting wheel itself. Has the thrust bearing in the lens clamp been serviced? Perhapes the encoders are failing?

DISCLAIMER: It's been about a year since I've been inside a Kappa

Why do you use an edger for cribbing?

We double chuck and have no slippage.

Our main line edgers are 7E and we only crib high minus large blank lenses (75/80mm) which are from an outsource lab. Cribbing seems to be the only option since these type of lenses hit the hub.
