    FF Progressive lense marking

A new client arrives in the office with a pair of eyeglasses and a new Rx. They wish to use their same frame, which has an unknown brand of FF surfaced lenses. Identification marks are visable, but without a know marking chart, it is impossible to verify seg height, optical centers, corridor depth or any other characteristics of their present lense. Yes we will take the PD , measure seg heights and do all of the necessary things, but how can we be sure the client will re-adjust to "our FF lense " versus his origional ones.

Why does it matter what car they drove before they got a new one? Lenses are no different.

Right on Craig!!! I agree. Just do what you do best, and do it for the patient. It doesn't matter what they wore before, if you believe you are fitting them with what you feel is the best lens for them and you are putting your best effort into that patients time and vision.

You could attempt to communicate with the previous eye care professional that fitted them.

If that is not possible.........try to discern the index of material used, and the optical qualities of their existing product, such as near area, corridor width, and distance peripheral distortion. These characteristics are apparent from brand to brand. Apply your best substitute, and above all...................explain your thought process to the client. Good luck!!!!

I always read the power 6 mm above the PRP if I don't know what the lens design is, to makes sure we know the true distance RX, incase it is a 6 drop progressive like Zeiss.

99% are 4 drop though and either way that is just for pre-refracting. When it comes to making glasses, my (your) stuff should ALWAYS be better, or at least equivalent (or you are fitting the wrong stuff!) Just recommend your best lenses and go from there!
