I had a patient that wondered if transition will prevent the absorption of vitamin d form the sun. I haven't found anything on the google machine about it. So figure will check with the group of knowledge that is optiboard.
Thanks
Dan

Snarky answer? Only if you wore transitions all over your exposed skin.
The answer for the patient is yes, Transitions and any UV blocking lens will reduce the amount of UV exposure to the skin, although by a small amount (the area of the lenses divided by the area of other skin exposed to the sun X 100 will give you a rough percentage of reduction) But remember if you're fully clothed with long sleeves and wearing a hat your total solar dose may only be to your hands. And if you use sunblock, you may be getting close to zero exposure. It is UVB on the skin that causes the body to produce vitamin D, which is a good thing, but no more than 20 minutes a day or so unprotected is recommended for other health reasons. As in most things, moderation is the best bet. I'm thinking a 10 minute frolic per day in your skivvies (or less) might be just about right.
Check out what sunshine can do to make you healthy
