Non-surgical treatment for cataracts inches closer

Scientists in the US and China have provided tantalising evidence of the potential for an eye drop treatment for cataracts, which could advance to clinical trials in as little as a year.

The research, published in the journal Nature, shows that treating cataractous lenses with lanosterol, a molecular building block of steroids, was found to reduce the cloudy protein build up in the tissue. The findings identify the molecule as a key component in cataract formation and highlight its potential as a non-surgical treatment.

Very interesting development in the field of eye care. Today most of the old age people are having cataracts and this been a severe eye issue for a long time. Development of eye drops for cataract will be a good innovative find for the people suffering from cataracts. Cataract surgery is the present best treatment to get rid of cataracts and my mom had done it at a cataract surgery center in Seattle. Most of the people are afraid of doing surgery especially when they get old, but I think cataract surgery is safe and effective.

Eating fresh pineapple 2 or 3 times a week is pretty darn good too for preventing and treating cataracts, and you don't have to wait a year. Bromelain, an enzyme in pineapple, is the active ingredient and it is very concentrated in the edible parts of the core as well as in the meat of the fruit. There are many other benefits to be had from eating pineapple regularly as well.

The fact that the only paper I see on it was published in NATURE tells me that it was probably rejected by mainstream scientific and medical journals. I wouldn't hold my breath. Besides, cataract surgery is a wonderully free refractive error fix. Way better than LASIK or PRK ever were. I always present the diagnosis as a good thing, and the sooner the better.

Just because they grow it doesn't mean they eat it regularly or at all.
