My pupilometer constantly eats AA batteries like its at a buffet. It is an Essilor model. Any opticians out there have a better pupilometer or a very good PD ruler instead?

Does the light shut off when you set it down? If not it is probably a bad mercury switch. It may be a hassle but you can remove the batteries between each use.
The gold standard for PD measurements used to be a PD rule and pen light.
Try the Nidek pupilometer it is much brighter and easier to see the pupils than the E one; it is also more $$ but we have one at every dispensing table.
Pupillometers have been around since the early 1930s. The first one was marketed by Zeiss and in daily use by opticians in Europe ever since.
There are several patents on them listed at:

Ziggster, whether you sound like a smart *** or not, the PD stick is indeed a wonderful tool. In addition to measuring PD's you can also measure all sorts of other stuff with it, use it as a letter opener, open paint cans or stir your coffee. You can carry it in your pocket, the little woman can carry it in her bra and use it in the office the car or at home. It is unaffected by heat or cold and will operate under all conditions with the exception of total darkness.
I have always used a marker and one eye...lol. never runs out of batts! Only used our pupilometer a few times...i hate it. I just recently got a ipad measuring system from walman called spec tech and its wonderful. been SUPER reliable.
