    edge finishing pen?

Is there a product that takes the milky white finish of cr-39, and turns it into more of a satin finish so it doesn't show in frames when edged? I've recently gone back to wearing mostly sv free-form cr-39 in my full frames, which I prefer for clarity, but I'm not in love with the way it shows white in the frames. I refuse to have a polished edge, and I feel like there's a pen that you can swipe over the edge and take that bright white milky color and make is look see through without a polish.

Thank you in advance for any info!

Barry does this technique that I have copied on occasion, He edge tints CR39 W/AR by putting it in frame matching color at a very low temperature as to not damage the AR. The AR stack stops the tint from absorbing anywhere but the edges, the results are phenomenal.

The pen you speak of I believe Chris Ryser invented and it is only available for poly IIRC.

ugh that kinda stinks, since I don't have a tint unit at my house, and I was thinking I would just buy the pen for me. Any other ideas???

Do you have a dremel tool, if you don't you should, you can get a buffing pad for it and apply a satin finish on the edge. Less mess than a tint tank.

You could use one of those "Hint of tint" pens in a matching color. Lightly applied of course.

    Excellent!

I think it produces the best edge tint results. I will often spec CR39 free form w/AR, up to -4.00D, into a zyl frame, and add edge tint this way!

Compates quite well cosmetically to jobs made elsewhere, especially when you can control the bevel placement in house.

goto autozone... in the paint section, find the sand paper area... look for 3000 grit, its backed on a lil bit of foam. wet it before using it... also put something on the ar so your fingers wont scratch it ( it can create some static and particles might cling to lens, but being wet def helps with that) This will get you a super nice satin on the edge with out the polish look
    * Lay foam on solid flat surface and rub edge till desired sheen is achived.

This or use a dremel to lightly polish would be my best suggestions.

    as Barry said .............nothing

Polycarbonate edge tinting is done with special solvent dyes that become part of the lens edges as the solvent fuses them with the poly.

CR is not affected by most chemicals.

Coming from the opposite direction. .. Polish to opaque. But you get the idea. I didn't wet mine so it would ruff it a bit more as I really needed to get away from the high lustre.

    What I bought.

    Before

    After

    Protection

Side by side... you can kinda see the difference of the satin & polish.

When edge thickness and white edges make the glasses look a bit ugly we sometimes use carbon graphite powder, rubbed along the lens edges. Most of the time this really works well for us. It is easy to apply and reapply when necessary.

This camouflages the whiteness and is much better than a shiny edge polish which, imho, attracts more attention to the lens thickness.
