costco?
That's what flickr said.
Those are actual trays, with only 1 person in sight among 16 MEI edgers.
and how much do those beauties cost ? (wiping up the drool as I type)
with automation and the new block less upgrade, around $300k/ea
You'd think Id have a quicker turn around time then 2 weeks with this kind of technology in the world. It's terrible that every mdiecaid job in the state goes to one guy in a lab that's dimly lit by a dangling light buld and he uses crimpers and a nail file to cut lenses down.
The Bisphera can edge 400 pairs per 8 hour shift.......I don't think Cotsco has that many jobs.
I see 14 units x 400 = 5,600 pairs per 8 hour shift........
To me this looks more like the MEI wharehouse.
Costco does about 4000-5000 jobs per day per lab.
400 jobs per 8 hours is pushing it, that would only be if all your jobs are sv, low power poly, no ar, no grooving, etc..
250 is a more realistic number.
and costco definitely has that many jobs,
their two labs are open 24/7, and only close for costco holidays.
If they were ranked in the independent lab rankings, each lab would be in the top 10 in the nation in terms of volume
+1. I count 15 at 750 JPH and 22 hours per day operation = 16,500. Definitely not a 'real' set up cutting jobs - looks more like a demo/storage/training facility.
The largest lab in the world by daily volume is in Thailand and processes 24,000 JPD (uncuts mostly) in a 24 hour time span and is global volume. No company or single lab facility in North America has that kind of E&A volume per day.
Looks very impressive though!

costco has about 600-650 warehouses in the united states, I believe about 500 have opticals
Each location does about $4k-$10k per day, they open 7 days a week, and only close on major holiday's
With an average price of $130 for poly sv, and $200 for poly PAL, you can easily do the math on where the volume comes from.
Those prices for poly are nothing special, I always thought Costco would be cheaper than that. I can do a digital Pal for those prices, not my best but I can do it.
Hey Ml43, is that lab always a no mans land like that when you were there?
Claustrophobics need not apply. Even with the windows I'd go NUTS working in that small blue box all day!!!
Those prices are including a frame ;)
in the edging department, yes,
other departments, no way.
They employ about 500-550 people per lab, 80% are full time.
each department(receiving, service, stock, surfacing , coating, mounting/final, shipping)
has at least two managers and 3-4 supervisors.
Remember, that picture is only about 1/5 of the lab.
lol, I assume that's a witty joke
I'm kidding. It's all automated.
Do I recall correctly that the blank being placed in the tray is the only time the lens is touched until surfacing is completed?
Thanks ml. The machines in the picture are strictly digital. No?
Is the day coming when all jobs will be processed digitally?
