No. Spectacle lens manufacturing is done in Germany. This will affect precision optical glass and special filter glass production big time.
15 years ago, heck yeah. They'd have been dealing with close to 100 tons of molten glass.
(where Schott made all of its spectacle glass 15 years ago is what it should have said, I will edit.)

Hopefully the fire department was aware of the processes being carried out in the plant. Back in the day AO in Southbridge, MA had its own fire department. Ill bet B&L in Rochester did the same. You just don't play water on those furnaces lest you have a massive steam explosion.
I toured the plant back in the day several times, and yes, they were fully aware of what was in there.
