    Why does Airwear smell different?

I know different polycarbonate smell slightly different (usually only can be noticed if the grind chamber is open and you are right near it, but Airwear has a strong (yet not unpleasant) odor when being edged - one strong enough to fill the immediate area with a scent.

Why is this? What do they put in Airwear that isn't in other poly?

I've always wondered this - what it is specifically in the mixture... someone here has to know!!!

The souls from the employees of all the labs they've taken over?

A secret blend of 11 herbs and spices?

Maybe they don't add something, but remove something other vendors leave in?

Maybe it's the same stuff, just mixed in slightly different proportions?

Maybe we've edged too much 1.74 in the lab today and I should just go lie down.
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.

I know some of the high index lenses have varying amounts of sulfur in them but that's not going to produce a pleasant smell unless you're a housefly.

Perhaps it's a proprietary hard coat but that's just a guess.

Tell you something else! Different polys sound different when you cut them also!

I always found high index smells like automotive body filler. Harkens back to my teen years trying to hold my car together.

    Their proprietary version on polycarbonate.

What material is used to manufacture Airwear® lenses?

Airwear lenses are made from a proprietary polycarbonate resin — the same material that NASA uses to make visors for their astronauts. Polycarbonate is widely used in everyday products including computers, car headlights, helmets, etc. But Airwear utilizes the latest R&D improvements resulting in a purer material resin for the optical industry. The result — a superior lens material that provides the optimum in optical performance.
