Chronicles of the Ready Made Readers

Women walks in to ABC Optical asking about ready-made readers. She is looking to buy (but actually just inquiring about) some readers because she is at work and needs to see.

    So it begins ...

Lady: Where are your reading glasses? You know ... the ones that you could try on and see.

Opti: Okay. You are looking for some of our ready-made readers.

    Lady: yea, those

Opti: Do you know the strength you normally use?

    Lady: No

Opti: Do you have a copy of your previous prescription?

    Lady: No

Opti: So, we need to schedule you for an exam so that we can get a prescription for you.

Lady: I don't need an exam. I just want to see.

Opti: I would be more than happy to assist you but if you don't know your strength and you don't have a prescription, I wouldn't be able to assist you.

    Lady: sigh

Opti: Perhaps, may I ask you a question that would help me figure this out. Please take no offense.

    Lady: sure

    Opti: How old are you?

    Lady: Why?

Opti: (figuring out the best way to explain) Because, knowing your age will help me figure out the strength and power of the lenses that would help you see best.

    Lady: never answers. just stares

    Opti: Ms

Lady: I just want to see. (walks off) I have glasses at my desk at work perhaps you can get it from those.

Opti: (thinking ... wow ... you could have lead with that ... and you would've had glasses by now)

Give her a reading card and a pair of +2.00.

    How's that? Closer/further?...

    Done

At worst- "You look to be too young for readers. How old are you? 39?"

Mmmm. When reflect upon our added value, why...given the slim profits in OTC readers....would anyone want help a buyer figure their Rx from scratch, something we almost never do in higher value, Rx eyewear?
So let her look, and pick until her heart's content. Or don't carry them at all.

You're not making enough to perform this service at this price point.

I agree Barry but if you do contacts you should carry a limited selection. If a $20 bill is on the floor I'm not to proud to pick it up (and put it towards my MSL retirement plan).

That gets me and I absolutely loooooveee it when after all the years they have been self refracting and then somehow finds their way into the doctor's office who prescribes them with the correct Rx they should be wearing they claim they can not see and cuss you (the optician) saying that it is all your fault, it was all your error, you referred them to the "stupid" doctor, and you should pay to fix it.

They finish with the customers are always right. I still wonder about that.

And, yes that was a run on sentence.

Agreed. Perhaps, I should clear that suggestion with my manager who for whatever reason believes that we should keep them in stock yet they rarely move. I wonder about that too.
