Question about seg drops

So this post is more for my own knowledge than figuring out a way to help the place I'm working.
I've see lenses with different drops (am I using the correct term here?) from 6mm drops in some of the Zeiss lenses to a few 2mm, and 0mm drops in some Seiko and house lenses.
Does this do anything from a visual stand point? Does the longer drop give more of a corridor? Or are they just trolling us for fun?

Basically the differences is more manufacture's preference and has little to do with optics
