    Wax blocking question

We have been freebond blocking (without taping) for lo these many years without any real issues except lens cleaning. We have always used this piece of junk lens washer and have gone through 6 of them over the years. I've replaced parts, robbed parts, retrofitted and rigged as much as I care to. What have you found to be the best alternative? Thinking about taping to eliminate so much freebond issues, if so what auto taping machine is recommended? What are your blocking / deblocking / cleaning procedures? Thanks in advance for your input.

First of all, I do not envy you. When I was in the lab, we'd look at an untaped lens with the same feeling as a ripped garbage bag: "... Sh*t, man." No one likes cleaning those. It sucks.

That being said, any taper is good so long as your technique is good. What made the biggest difference, imo, is making sure that if you're manually cutting it out, make sure you press down the tape along the edge of the lens, so that it doesn't flap up during generating a plus job or fining. Other than that, it's pretty much fool proof.
    Sincerely,
    Chad Sobodash ABO-AC

Dunno, someone told me they exist once, but I haven't seen one. The one we used was an old 3M taper. They're a workhorse; those damn machines will outlive you. You can buy one for around $690 on UsedLabs.com

Edit: automatic as in it will cut it for you. A "manual" taper is one that applies the tape to the lens with a vacuum and you cut it out with a quick swipe. An "automatic" taper will save you all of 4 seconds on each lens, if that's a priority.
    Sincerely,

For 50 jobs just get a manual taper and tape all the lenses.

We used a vacuum taper at LC in the lab. Wax blocking and a piece of PVC pipe for de blocking. Un taped lenses suck. Scrapping wax off the front of the lens is just awful. Ive used a one step blocker but never had the pleasure of using a manual taper. After looking at its capability wow, that's amazing. We were running about 100 jobs a day at our place and did just fine with the blocker we had.

How do you use the PVC pipe for deblocking?

With the block inside the PVC pipe, whack it on your workbench, block falls right off the lens. I use an aluminum plate mounted to the workbench as the whackee
