  • Wholesale & Web with a Retail Front

Here's what happens when optical wholesalers turn into retail suppliers for survival mode. Mr. DB has struck again with his arm length wholesale/web concept direct to retail storefront. If you're a DL customer in any of the regions listed on his website, your supplier is now your competitor.

Nothing more than a pint size Coastal.

The whole story about this group has been questionable. But how do you stop someone with a wholesale lab from opening retail. Wholesale labs could use the arguement, ECPs doing in house surface/cut & grind is competion to them.

Perhaps Chris Ryser might be able to translate those newspaper articles to English for us as they would have been printed in French in the Quebec newspapers perhaps in Trois Rivieres or Montreal

More than half a million dollars in public funds are in jeopardy after being awarded to companies run by a businessman who was nevertheless prosecuted for bad debts.

According to documents reviewed by our Bureau of Investigation, two companies run by Daniel Beaulieu, CEO of the company network DirectLab Three Rivers, received four years several public financial aid.

DirectLab manufactures and markets lenses in optometry.

Beaulieu, 55, has already been sued personally by the National Bank in 2009 and was ordered to repay the amount due in April 2012.

                              Six state aid

Despite the lawsuit, the companies Beaulieu received many public assistance:

                              - Centre-du-Québec Regional Economic Intervention Fund (PROUD) granted DirectLab Capital funding from $ 500,000 in September 2012.

                              - Innovation and Economic Development Trois-Rivières (IDETR) provided a loan of $ 125,000 to DirectLab Capital in November 2011.

                              - The Local Development Centre (CLD) Drummond paid a loan of $ 75,000 to DirectLab Drummondville in June 2010.

                              - Local Solidarity Fund of the MRC de Drummond also provided a loan of $ 50,000 in June 2010 to DirectLab Drummondville.

                              - Investissement Québec was committed in January 2014 to make a loan of $ 200,000 to DirectLab Capital, but the amount was not paid.

                              - An amount of $ 262,500 paid by Laurentian Bank is also guaranteed 80% by the federal government.

In 2014, all loans are in arrears and organizations have gone to court to try to recover their bearings.

According CLD Drummond, Beaulieu associates have already repaid the money they had condoned but itself has not repaid his personal share. It has not paid its share of the loan at Laurentian.

A numbered company connected to DirectLab Capital was placed into bankruptcy on April 11.

                              legal problems

Yet a simple review of the court record of Daniel Beaulieu would have revealed that the businessman has not always been a good payer.

In a lawsuit filed in 2009 against Beaulieu and two others, National Bank claimed it amounts to a draft of Optometry went wrong in Ontario.

In April 2012, Beaulieu was ordered to pay National $ 235,000 plus interest charges. The amount was later reduced to $ 175,000. "The court does not doubt the efforts of Mr. Beaulieu who has traveled the world to find customers and financing. Unfortunately, during this time, the company was mismanaged, "said the judge. He added that "many reorganization plans put forward by Mr. Beaulieu" have not been implemented.

The Chamber of Notaries was also fined in 2007 for accounting problems. He was removed from the House in 2009.

When contacted, Mr. Beaulieu has himself admitted that he had been removed because he had never paid the fines due.

"You teach me. Normally you do an audit, but now it has escaped us, "said the industrial commissioner, Martin Dupont, CLD Drummond.

According to Miller, it is not certain that the CLD succeed in charging Beaulieu are missing. The CLD has obtained against him and three associates in March a judgment against them pay 56 $ 054.53. "He has not paid its share. We will look at how much it will cost us in legal fees. If it costs more than it should, we can not go further, "said he said.
