Just a note to let everyone know that the photos from the OptiBoarders meeting at Vision Expo West were published in the October 9th issue of Vision Monday. They're on Page 47.

Thanks Karlen! And next time I'll be sure to strike a more traditional pose so my photo can make the cut too! :D

Never mind about ending up on the cutting room floor, as it were, you could make it your thing! The mysterious guide that no-one ever sees. A bit like the Wizard of Oz, but less gay.
    Congratulations though!

Yes, but he struggled to come to terms with his sexuality, as homophobia was rife in the kingdom of Oz at that time. Mother Oz had expected him to settle down with a nice Lullaby Leaguer, but instead, the young Oz found his thoughts turning more and more to the members of the Lollipop Guild. With his mind in turmoil, he became increasingly reclusive, choosing to hide away from the small-minded bigotry that had shaped his tortured psyche, and so he undertook the sub-persona which Dorothy encountered and overcame in the film. Nowadays, he lives happily with the Tin Man, and he often speaks at functions about the importance of tolerance in today's society.

And I could tell all that from the scene where Toto pulls the curtain back.

    Maria,

That was great. I can remember when "gay" meant happy and carefree :-)

    Maria,

One thing I forgot to ask. What can you tell me about the Cowardly Lion? I think I caught him eyeballing the Scare Crow a few times and he did have that lisp thing going on. Thanks for the insight :-)

    The Lion wasn't gay!
    He was a kleptomaniac.
That's why he was such a nervous wreck. He was constantly waiting to feel the irreversible weight of the security guard's hand on his shoulder(there's probably a gay joke in there, but then the tale would have to involve two hands on his shoulders).
Because, you see, the bow on his tail was stolen from the Oz branch of Woolworths. He wore it as a symbolic badge of his failure to overcome the stereotypical image of lions as macho, when all he really wanted to do was raise the kids whilst Mrs Lion pursued a high-flying career as a stockbroker on the Yellow Brick Strip (just off the Yellow Brick Road)
Mrs Lion, unfortunatly, was very corrupt, and instead of encouraging her husband to seek help for his problems, made him pinch Chanel handbags for her.
MGM execs felt she couldn't participate in the film, as she didn't make a very good role model for girls. Not because she was self-centered, but because she had a job. (It was the 40's, after all)

I learnt this from the song 'Lions and tigers and bears oh my'

    Dear Maria,
Actually, it was the 30's not the 40's.I have been reading all of the above with considerable glee and whilst researching the date, came across a great website I thought all of the Ozophiles would find equally entertaining.Check it out! Best wishes from the colonies! http://www.eskimo.com/~tiktok/index.html

I knew it was either the beginning or the end of WW2.
(WW2, for those of you who are American, actually started in 1939, believe it or not :))

Actually, one could argue that Wilsons' plan incited WWII, by destroying Germany's economy, and thus realizing The National Socialists' self fulfilling prophesy, and, all nations' goal: self reliance, though through any means. Ergo Hitlers policies.

P.S. Canada had the third largest navy in the world.

Wilson's plan? Do you refer to his Fourteen Points, or to the League of Nations - the two features of the Treaty of Versailles generally ascribed to him?

Perhaps you meant to say "Clemenceau's plan", or "Lloyd ('squeeze them until the pips squeak') George's plan".

    Maria,
We in the Colonies called the period between 9/1/39 to May of 1940 "the phony war" because nothing happened after Poland fell, but you are correct, WWII began in 1939.

    to historains Shwing and shanbaum,
If you really wanted to stretch it just a tad more, bring up the Franco-Prussian War 1870-1871 which created a unified Germany for the first time in history.

We've come an awful long way from the photos which appeared in the last issue of Vision Monday, but I for one am having a blast! From CapeCod with best wishes to new friends in the industry.

Yeah, the reperations for WW1 were a stupid idea, come to think of it :)
Do you lot get the series 'Blackadder Goes Forth' in the US? It has the best definition of WW1 ever.

It may have been on PBS at one point, but I don't think it is now, at least, not in Connecticut. In any case, I never watched it - I will if it pops up again.

When these BBC productions are presented here, they're usually a year old, or older. The various PBS stations seem to make separate arrangements with BBC. When I lived in North Carolina, the local PBS station carried EastEnders, on which, I'm embarrassed to admit, I got hooked. It started when I lighted on it whilst channel-surfing; my wife and I watched for several minutes after which we looked at each other and I asked, "Have you understood a word they've said?", which we hadn't, despite the language spoken having been English, at least, ostensibly. So, it started as a challenge.

BBC have a service in the US but I've never seen it offerred via cable, only satellite, which I don't have, so, no more Albert Square for me. Did Sharon ever marry Grant? Or was it Phil? Or both?

    Hey Steve!

I wonder if your head ever gets big from all the recognition that the Optiboard receives. I have heard mentions on board websites, an international optical publication and Vision Monday. That's a lot of recognition for your job well done! I for one am glad you are getting the recognition for your hard work! I developed a couple of webpages and spent most of a weekend and a lot of late nights and it's no where close to this! HA! HA!

Eastenders - First, it's set in east London, so they're all cockneys. I can't understand them half the time.
Second - Sharon and Grant. Well, where do I start? Sharon and Grant got married, but then Sharon slept with Phil, and confessed all on a tape to Michelle (who has two illegitimate children, one by Grant and one by Sharon's father, Den) Grant played the tape in the Queen Vic, and was so upset he beat Phil up, and divorced Sharon. Phil then married Kathy, (mother of Ian Beale), and Grant slept with her. Grant married Tiffany, who got run over by Frank, so Grant moved to America. The goings on!
And I would like to apologise to Cindy for her posting having no continuity with the others, despite being on topic. :)

Nah - my wife makes sure to put me in my place on a regular basis, so there's no chance of my ego getting too big!

Anyway, thanks for the kind words Cindy. I've been traveling for the past 6 days and haven't had the chance to check the Board in a while. It sure looks like the registrations and messages keep growing at a good pace. :)

I always get into these discussions late.

I'm not a film buff but seem to recall that The Wizzard, Gone With The Wind & Fantasia were all released 1939. Could anyone nominate another year with an equal offering? For that matter, could anyone name one film released in the last 5 years comperable to those?

Maria, your satire is supurb! Thanks.

Steve, your efforts are appreciated. Kudos.

Actually, 'Kaffy' and 'Fill' were (or was?) conceiveable - they had a child. I think it was called Ben, but you never saw it much.

That would be semi-incestous, because Ben's grandmother, Peggy, is married to Diane's father, Frank. (But Fat Pat looks set to win him back, as they are having an affair because Pat's husband is impotent)
