ID:	11294 Is it to expensive or time consuming? It looks more like an art then a skill if done by hand. Ive tried to facet lenses and got some .... interesting results. Is it gone for good?

I still display and make custom, one of a kinds w/facets and stone inlays. Not the big seller that they were in the eighties, but we still get the occasional lady that wants and loves fine eye "jewelry".

Nothing in frame fashion is gone for good..............it always come back in a little more modern style.

There used to be an OptiBoard member "Billy Brock" who used to supply these type glasses and I heard he retired a few years ago. However his website is still active as I just found out and you can see it at : http://billybrock.com/index.htm

Billy Brock working with Tura frames♡♡ had a sample wheel of stone colors, women LOVED this because basically they designed there own glasses. His wife ?? Would take the orders on the phone and she was so nice and pleasure to talk to. My mom still has a pair♡. There also was a company out of California called Multi Facets. In my younger days I used to hand facet and drill them myself for the Luxottica Athens or Athena? One of those names, lol used to be pretty good at it♡ as long as they bring back those crazy stickers that attached at the bottom of lens like hearts, zodiac signs and initials. Yuck.

WOW how did Mr. Brock sculpt those leaves into the frame? Is that an engraving tool? Is there a course somewhere to learn how to do that? Amazing

We used to do faceting in house and some simple engraving. For real professional engraving we used to send lenses to Pepe Herman in Tilton, NH. I am sure that you can find someone in your area that engraves crystal. If you have some talent you can pick up this skill. Just get some old lenses and practice, practice, practice.

We did a pant load of these in the seventies but not too many in the eighties. We made a lot of money back in the seventies doing this; $100.00 - $200.00 a pair for an hours work. I don't think that there is much of a market for faceting these days in your typical mall or optometric operation but I will bet that a high end shop could make some large boat payments by providing this service. Mrs. Thurston Howell IIII (Lovey) would just die for a pair of these.
