Bifocal For 8 Year Old W/Mild Downs?

We don't do pediatrics and rarely see outside Rxs for them.
However I do have this young man who I have done SV distance pairs for a few times.
He now has an Rx and glasses for a distance pair and a near pair but we are talking about trying a bi-focal.
Could I get input from a few of you that do this sort of thing every day please?

    Distance Rx =
    OD: +4.75 -1.25 X 108
    OS: +6.25 -2.50 X 30

    Near Rx =
    OD: +7.25 -1.25 108
    OS: +8.75 -2.50 X 30

    Distance PD = 52

    What segment would you use?
I think I recall that "round" segs. are used for some reason?

    Material?

    Anything else?

    Thanks

FT-28 in aspheric poly, or your material of choice (trivex) if the eyesize is puny enough.

Round segs are never used for optical purposes anymore, that I'm aware of.

You have a +2.50 add to eliminate all accommodation so it's a binocular vision case. Fit it about 4 mm below pupil center, like you would a trifocal height.

Free-form would be nice with that cyl, but that's not mandatory.

(May be worth a shout out to the prescriber to kick around the BF idea---he/she may be up to something esoteric with Down's and two pairs of glasses, but I don't know what it would be.)

on our downs patients that need a bifocal we do a round seg, they tend to have fewer issues than with the definate line of a bifocal. The problem is it's material availability, it's very limited.

We deal with quite a few kids and split pupil jobs, in my experience with or without downs the youngsters handle the round segs better, they are just less distracting, you can get a few different sizes of them but yes they are pretty well limited to CR39 but Sola makes them with a front scratch coat, coat the back and they hold up pretty good.

Why do we see some of the worst + Rx's on the young ones?, as if some don't have enough problems now they need 8 base lenses,my heart goes out to them

Trivex / round seg. More invisible and light weight.

The bigger issue is frame fit. These folks have very flat bridges. Their glasses slip a lot. Make sure you establish the POW.

Thank you all for the input.
If Mom decides to give it a try then a round seg in Trivex it shall be.
That is what I thought but wanted to be sure.
