To polish or not to polish

    Hello All,

I've been told to not polish thick/high RX lenses for various reasons, such as:

    1) it can give the effect of not looking as thick as the lens really is.
    2) You won't see the concentric rings on the edges of the lens.
    3) The patient will not experience glare coming off the edge of the lens.

Please share your personal opinion on this matter.

The best source is the patient, look at what they are wearing and ask them if they prefer a polish, satin finish, high luster or none at all. Me, I prefer a slight roll with a satin finish but I never assume what the patient wants. If they don't know and you have access to a stone and polishing wheel do it yourself and start slow.

I avoid polish if possible, sometimes even a light dip in the tint tank to darken the edges. Good bevel placement to hide thickness and proper frame selection to minimize thickness are key when fabricating. Of course that requires an edger in office, and the foresight to know when bevel placement is crucial. On rimless and semi-rimless I prefer a polish for cosmetics but in those cases I try and avoid high Rx's when selection occurs.

Harry's explanation is perfect, it can't get much better than that

I only like a polish on drill-mounted glasses such as Silhouettes. Polish creates some optical problems, but drill-mounts without an edge polish look cheap to me.
I'm Andrew Hamm and I approve this message.

Wearing a pair of high minus, edge-polished rimless myself, I like the cosmetics but there are some goofy optical effects that could bother a picky person. But it has to be done, like Andrew Hamm says.

I usually split the difference by going with satin. Looks nice; not frosty like a windshield, not too reflective like an ice cube.

On rare occasion I'll recommend no polish if the frame is matte, to match it.

To hide thick-appearing edges, though, I think a little tint is good, like Harry does.

I can't stand my lenses polished. Satin finish all the way. Too much reflection otherwise. My silhouettes have a satin finish...not shiny and not white.

I think it really varies from patient to patient. I personally have a drilled rimless with high luster polish and I am a -6.00 OU. I don't wear them all the time, basically just got them to show patients how thin a 1.74 is. But when I do wear them I have no issues with the polish. I don't get many complaints but the most common one is that they do get reflections off the edges of the lenses.

I think the pickiness lies mostly with opticians, not eyeglass wearers. We polish a lot, definitely every rimless and semi. I get maybe only a dozen comments a year about edge reflections, and then if need be I have a selection of fine sponges I use to buff down the polish if its too much for them, and then just note in their accounts not to polish in the future. I do forgo polish on Transitions to eliminate edge reflections and maximize darkness. But the vast majority of wearers have no issues and polish certainly gives eyewear a jewelry-like finished appearance. Absolutely correct though, if in doubt consult the wearer.
