I am completely shocked, there are no words except to say how very sorry I am to hear this news. My thoughts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.

RIP Darryl, we will miss your wisdom and your posts here. I found myself wishing my math teachers in high school were more like you, my grades would have been much better I think. Such a loss! Thank you for sharing all that knowledge with us and making it SO interesting. My condolences to your friends and family.

The greatest regret of my optical career will be that I never got to meet him in person, or thank him for all that I learned just from his papers.

Truly a great loss way, way too soon.

My condolences to his family, and may he be at peace.
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.

I'd just like to say that Darryl was so forthcoming with information and his own wisdom, which was always alarmingly pure, without bias. He personally helped me when I asked him, despite not knowing me and having nothing to gain from doing so. I think the industry has lost one of its best.

    I don't reach out much...

I've been at this for 26+ years. And, I try very hard to know the answer before asking for help. Though, occasionally, I do look to Optiboard for answers.

(And, I appreciate each and every one of you for the answers I discover here!)

But, the one time... I did?

This is what I received after a few enlightening PM's about how "Access" lenses actually functioned before I fully understood 'their kind'...

"I'm glad to help, and I do hope that you guys can get a pair of these back that satisfies your patient. If you need anything else though, just let me know.

    Best regards,
    Darryl"

The follow-up was: My patient was perfectly happy, thanks to his insights and willingness to explain EXACTLY what I needed to know.

That's as much as I can attest to his willingness to help anyone (even me!) who needed it!

I have been pretty broken hearted over this news for the last few days...

As, have many more of you that actually knew Darryl.

Like many others, I never met him but , he taught me something.
That meant a lot to me.

    R.I.P. Darryl

    :(

Darryl's funeral is today. FWIW, the local paper said he died at his home, no cause is listed.

I, along with many here, are still in a bit of shock over his untimely passing. A healthy man in his early 40's isn't ordinarily lost so abruptly of course - no word on the cause of his passing? Love and light to those who survive him. So deeply saddening. Optical aside, he was just a good man - deeply missed.

I have asked the same question several days ago on this thread and no one has answered me. I did a Google search and found his obituary which says "...He passed in his home" -- That, along with his young age and never hearing about past ailments (cancer etc.) I think I can take a very good guess on what happened. Also, if someone is battling and was lost to an illness, the obituary would usually specify that.

I have never met him, but I have spoken to some reps from Zeiss in the past months who mentioned him as if he was doing just fine. Since I have no information, I am left only with that "good guess" on what happened and I think we all know what that would be... Very sad...

I suggest we not engage in speculation about the cause of Darryl's untimely death. First, it's no one else's business, and second, this is a matter for the family to decide whether to share or not share.

Please respect Darryl's memory and the privacy of his family.

There's nothing wrong with being curious about something, especially wanting to know what happened to such a landmark figure in the optical industry. As humans, we have no other option but to guess and infer when not knowing information, and there is nothing wrong with that.

We all care about Darryl and his family, and we naturally want to know about them.

Sometimes privacy is the kindest thing, and we should respect it (not saying that they wish privacy, but only if they do).

I just heard; I'm not good about checking in lately. It's hard to say enough about him without being pretentious. I recently sent him a few old Ronsirs and Sirmonts with original MED lenses for his collection. I was happy to give them to him as a thank-you gift for his many kindnesses, but he made a contribution to a good charity in my name for the value he set on them. He was that kind of person. I wish I knew what else to say. He was a good man; there aren't enough of those.

What a serious loss! I was unable to respond before now, but I will always remember Darryl. He took the time to explain so much to me. I never imagined I would consider someone so much younger a mentor. I don't think there will be a light so clear in our trade. I first met him through a colleague at SOLA and I believe that he was the finest facet of the purchase Zeiss made...He was always patient and attentive and that he was an auto-didact made him all the more amazing. I truly am feeling bereft...
