It's hard to believe I'm reading this. So sad. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

This sad news left me breathless. His knowledge and skills are unsurpassed, but knowledge and skills can be learned. His graciousness, compassion and civility, even while disagreeing or debating, will never be matched.

If I could love a guy I never met, it would be Darryl.

What a genius and how generous he was with his gift.

How many people have transcended all the junk that goes on in the business world to actually make the world a better place? Darryl is one of the very few.

Shocked would be putting it mildly. I've known, and shared ideas back and forth, with that great individual since he started with Sola. I will truly miss him.

Was he battling some sort of ailment that he ultimately passed from? Just wondering...

So saddened to hear about Darryl. My condolences to the Meister family.

I hope Zeiss/SOLA or the Vision Council creates an award, scholarship, something that honors a person that practices Darryl's work ethic and desire to share to make the industry stronger.

RIP my friend, I am so happy we made time to hang out and close down the vendor party at last years VEW.

I am still in shock. When I was Manager of Technical Services at Sola in the late 80s/early 90s, I remember talking to this bright young Optician from the Mid-West and was immediately impressed with not only the depth of his optical knowledge, but also his enthusiasm for everything optical related. So impressed in fact, that I told my boss Mark Shupnick about him saying that this is exactly the kind of person that comes along once in a great while and that we should see if we could hire him, which we did. It wasn't long before I realized that he was destined for optical greatness and would one day be seen as one of the venerable elder statesman in this industry.

Sadly he passed away before reaching that 'elder' status, but there is no doubt in my mind and those of anyone who has come to know him over the years that he was, and continued to remain, one of most talented and knowledgeable people in our industry. The optical world has lost one of it's brightest lights, and as a consequence our world is a lot dimmer now.

    R.I.P my friend.

His reach was felt further than his grasp. I recieved e-mails from professors in Europe confirming his passing.

I wish I had picked his brain more over the years. It's not how much he knew but how hard he worked to simplify that knowledge.

I owe him for all he shared, a great soul.

Every day of my dispensing life I use something he has given. Way too young and I will remember him as I continue to use his papers, calculators and theory. Wow...

I am not an overly emotional person, but this has brought tears to my eyes more than once. I can't help asking the universe, "why him?" There are so many selfish sorry jerks out there, and he was wise, brilliant, and giving. We are all poorer.

I actually had the pleasure of knowing Darryl personally, and I still cannot believe what I am reading here. We had many great conversations and had some things that we were going to work on, but just never found the time for.
God bless you Darryl, you were the best

Although I never met Darryl in person we worked very closely for many years at SOLA (then again with Zeiss). He started with SOLA a year before I did but it seemed like he’d been there forever, as was the depth of his product and optical knowledge. I too was lucky enough to employed at SOLA by Mark Shupnik, in the test and measurement group, and it wasn’t long before Darryl and I were talking optical analysis regarding our own and competitor lenses, mainly progressives. Back then it was always ironic that neither of us ‘needed’ them, and sadly it seems Darryl will never wear those progressives that we discussed so much.
You were a great guy Darryl – truly the ‘Meister’
    Rest in Peace old mate.
