Congratulations you will be doing the right thing. This has forever been the right way to go for an optician.
You will be able to give faster service and save tons of money by doing your own jobs. You can buy uncut lenses and finish the jobs in house. The finishing of jobs is where the real profit is and will let you make glasses for less. The more you can do yourself the better.
Finishing Edger (prefer santinelli), Hand edger, layout blocker, dye unit(6 pot sufficient), smart drill if you want to do drill mounts. Maybe stock finished poly ar single vision ( Range plano to -4.00 up to a -1.50 cyl). Machine to polish edges. Buy all this stuff used/refurbished.
Yes, all this stuff AND someone who knows how to use it will become invaluable. I might add to your stock lenses - SV poly and SV poly with and AR and Cr-39 (w/scr coating) and if you wanted to get extra fancy you could have some sv transition, but that could get expensive. Oh! have a few pair of plano polarized on hand to they come in handy.
