    Antique frame cleaning....

    Hey guys,

I just recently purchased one of those typical 12k gold antique cable temple frames from flea market and I want to fix it up. Should I ask my local lab if they have an ultra sonic cleaner (Is that the correct name for that vibrating tub?) to dip the frame in? It's actually pretty decent, but I want to get rid of the patina (green and black gunk) that is too small for any of my sharp headed tools to get.

Most opticians or optical labs do have a ultra sonic cleaner. Just send it to your lab and they will take care of it. No special knowledge is required, and it will come back clean and shiny.

Be sure to let your lab know it is gold. The surface is pretty soft and if not handled carefully it can be damaged easily

They are just gold filled GF or RP frames as they used to be standard nearly forever. They are more solid than any gold plated frame made today and need not more than a good optician, that has learned his or her trade.

I love the old stamped GF U.S. made metal frames. Quality has never been surpassed for metal frames. Cleaning solvents work great but if the frames have celluloid nose pads they'll discolor.
