    Really interesting, new eyewear blog...

    www.theeyewearblog.com

Moss Lipow is not slouch as an eyewear history/design authority.

Much of interest to anyone in eyewear here.

Oh, and Moss consider's his blog the next step in his continuing eyewear dialogue that begon with his tome, EYEWEAR.

    Discussion.

Redhot Jumper That really makes it interesting..........................................

There is a wealth of examples included herein—from a rudimentary bone sunshield and curious contraptions of leather and wood to lorgnettes, pince-nez, monocles, aviators, and bedazzled cat eyes.

    That really makes it interesting.

Hello. I'm Moss. I wrote the blog. I also wrote the eyewear book published by Taschen that some of you may or may not have:

    http://www.taschen.com/pages/en/cata...ts.eyewear.htm

Is the blog being NSFW good or bad? Let me know and I'll post accordingly.

Unfortunately the post with Proksch is the only such image I'd planned to use in the foreseeable future. There are more pictures of women naked except for eyewear out there, though. I know. I've seen them.

    Hey, Moss!

Is your book on eyewear "safe for work"? I'd like to get it as a waiting-room book for my office, but we're a family practice, if you know what I mean.

No naked women but it's big and heavy: 400 pages, 1000 images.

It's safe unless you hit someone with it.

It could squelch someone small if dropped from a great height.

I'm interested in that kind of book.

    Thank you!

Question about eye wear: why is it so alluring to disguise or decorate one's eyes? What does that say about the psyche?

I discussed that in my first post.

Does it answer your question? At least somewhat?

    Yes, very nicely.

Are you a "revealer" or a "concealer"? :)

    Depends on my mood.

That's why I bought more than one pair. Then it turned into collecting. Then it turned into something else.

You should explain this to your patients. Everybody should have multiple pairs.

    Don't you think?

How about you? How many pairs do you have?

I believe in the beauty of function, and of simplicity. I also am rather "wholistic" and constant.

As such, I have one persona, and only as many eyeglasses as function dictate.

Aw, who am I kidding? I look crappy in glasses, so I wear contacts and rimless drill mounts when I don't.

You probably underrate yourself. Then again, how good did someone like Roy Orbison look in glasses? I think he looked great because they became fused with the public persona he created. Objectively speaking maybe not so much. I think he first started wearing the sunglasses because he couldn't find his regular prescription glasses. Either way he made a statement and created something stronger than his physical looks.

That's what glasses are good for.

It's funny. You're all (mostly) opticians here.

How many different pair do you actually own and wear yourselves?

That's a really good point. Thank you, Moss.

BTW, if you photographed or knew Roy Orbison, I always thought he looked like he was wearing +6.00's or aphakic spectacles. Any knowledge?

I also note that you worked with/for Elton John. Is there anyone more associated with glasses than he? He seems like a nice gentleman, now that he's older.

I never met him personally. He was a customer at one of my accounts. I just interviewed someone who did meet him personally. A friend of mine actually invented Glam Rock fashion in England - Clothed Marc Bolan, Slade, toured with the Rolling Stones doing wardrobe in the early 1970s. We actually discussed Elton John - he sold John a whole lot of clothing. It'll go up in a few days once I distill our discussion down to blog size. You ought to subscribe.

An Orbison related post will follow. I'm not sure of his Rx but I've heard he was blind as a bat.

Maybe this is mundane, but what do you think of Lady Gaga?

Greetings Moss and welcome to Optiboard.

You may want to subscribe here as well. The Pro's Forum has many incredibly knowledgeable posters and discusses things like costs that is not allowed on the open forum.

I believe you'll have me subscribing shortly as those who know me know what a slave to fashion I am.

I never met her. Truth is when you make things for people nowadays you're usually dealing with their stylists. In Lady Gaga's case this was Nicola Formichetti. The assistants had assistants. Sometimes you work directly with the personalities but it's mostly stylists who choose the clothing.

I'll be featuring a chat with one of my favorite stylists soon. She's amazing.

Well thank you. I've been lurking for a while. I think it's a fine source of information. And everybody knows Uncle Fester is a slave to fashion. I always thought the long black coat with the fur ruff was amazing.

By the way, ever see this?

I'd love to. Problem is there were about 1000 images from the book and 1500 from the proposal. I curated and collected 3000 pieces for the project. It'd take up too much bandwidth. Sometimes on the blog I'll feature a vintage piece with an anecdote about how I acquired it. You might find this one interesting:

    http://theeyewearblog.com/how-to-buy...lasses-ebay-1/

It's about the time I bought a minifier like Pope Leo X had from eBay.

If you're not familiar with the book you should check it out. You'd probably enjoy it.

I have about 18 pair, and in many colors and designs, including polka dots, and Hello Kitty. BTW - I am a 68 year semi-retired optician with IOLs, and I LOVE having fun with my glasses! Frames that I saved from the 1970s and 1980s are now back in style, and I have refurbished them and put new Rxs in. I am totally liking your blog!

Thanks, I'll add that to my repertoire.
