Temp plano lens after cat sx

Hello everyone! I'm an LDO in Florida and was told by someone if a pt has had Cat Sx and the Dr. wants them to have a temp plano lens in one eye that I need a legal rx for that. I know if they want them to have a temp FT28 then yes I do need a legal rx but for a plano?? Thanks for your help!

Don't think so. I would do a flat top also, as you can buy them in Dollar stores, heck, I sell them in sunglass lenses.

I'm sure legally it varies state by state. But I will say that post cat patients can be a liability as far as this goes. I'm sure your doc is covering his bases by saying you need a written RX. I used to work in MD/OD surgical center and we did have some pts get into car accidents right after picking up their temp glx. Literally, right outside of the building at a stop light! The imbalance throws them off. So you can imagine if you put in a plano lens without doc permission and then someone got hurt in a car accident! Lawyers would lick their chops on that one.

Cover your butt. Learn to practice defensively. Agreed I would want to drop a plano in there real quick and make a few bucks. But if you do not have a Rx from the Dr stating Plano you do not have his blessing to do so. Yes the MD is not thinking of that nor is any of his staff. They are not looking out for you. Only you can/should/ and will do.
For the above reason that erichwmack states. Crap like that happens. If a person in the above example has a close relative who is a slick lawyer they would be all over that.

Thanks everyone for your help! Better safe then sorry! I have alot of patients come in and the Doc has just told them to have me remove one lens. No temp lens or anything and this makes me nervous. I always talk to them about the imbalance and make them try the temp lens before they leave.

Of the three O's, the ophthos, by far, are the last ones I'd get optical advice from.

    cdhood,

Let the doctor know what your up to- if they've got a better idea (unlikely if you're skilled and experienced), they'll let you know.

Most folks do fine with no Rx distance and OTC readers as a temporary solution, others will continue to wear their old glasses as is, until a somewhat reliable refraction can be performed, usually within a week. There's no good reason to wait longer- if it changes, I'll remake it.

There are many possibilities, but in the end, our job is to get the client "up and running" ASAP, with the best level of vision and comfort as optically possible.
