    Old Gold

Does anyone know of a resource for recycling Old Gold? There used to be several smelters that would determine Gold content and then pay based on that number. Our Lions club has quite a bit of metal from recycling glasses but can't find a place to send it to.

    Thanks
    Bruce

Any pawn shop and most coin dealers do this. Some jewelers do as well.

You can send to a friend of mine at Ogani. His eyewear is all solid gold so he can process it and pay what it is worth. Let me know if you are interested and I will get you his contact information.

Blue Jumper Funny that nobody talks about the gold content of the frames ........................

Funny that nobody talks about the gold content of the frames to be recycled.

The original version of frames to be called gold filled were rolled on gold tubes................then the gold plated ...............and finally the gold colored which contains no more gold. The first 2 had to be stamped with GF and RP.

These frames have to be checked and sorted, Only the gold filled (GF 1/10 12K) were or are worth recycling.

Most of the frames I have are gold filled, old Shuron, B&L, Artcraft, and 3 piece mounts from as early as the forties probably. They are stamped 1/10K and 1/12K gold filled. Our Lions club used to have a source that we would send broken frames even with the lenses and nose pads still in them to somewhere out East. We would ship several large boxes, maybe 100# to them. We sent everything so a lot of the frames probably didn't have any gold them. We would often get checks around $500 for the precious metals in the frames. That was when gold was much less than today. We cannot find any of those places now. I would think even a small amount of gold filled would have some value today. I will check with some pawn shop and coin dealers and see if they have any interest.

That was probably Handy & Harmon in Attleboro, MA. Attleboro was one of the few towns that was the home to the gold filled business. We used to buy gold filled eye wire and frame findings back in the day when we custom made frames

I actually am apart owner in a small jewelry store. My advice would be bring it to a jewelry and see what they say. It's a matter of testing the gold karat and weight.

Try Respecs out of Los Angeles. Google them and see their website. They try to fix and resell the old gold frames rather than melt them all.

Last year I called and left messages and emailed them many times, I never got one response. I had assumed they were defunct. Have you been in touch with them recently?

I dealt with them about 6 years ago. Sold them a huge amount of antique frames. they used to advertise in our monthly Lions magazine but no more.
