    Polishing Glass

    Hello Optiboarders

I was wondering what are the compounds used to polish glass lenses during the lens making process?
And where do I get them?
I want to experiment on an old windshield to see what can be accomplished (or damaged) wrt fine scratches & haze.

    Just curious.

    Thanks
    Gibby

Cerium oxide available at your favorite lab supplier. Lotsa luck removing even the finest scratches.

Thanks for this. I also recall seeing a product called barkeep's friend. Perhaps its CeO2.

Barkeep's Friend is oxalic acid. The particle size is not nearly as well controlled so the danger of scratching would be greater that the ophthalmic grade cerium ozide.

I'm just guessing but if the windshield is safety tempered glass then you may end up with a lot of little pieces. If successful you no longer have a safety windshield unless you can temper it again.

Your windshield is a laminated glass while the side and rear windows are tempered.
