    Confused Refinishing Metal Frames

Does anyone know of a company that will refinish metal frames?
I know that Hilco used to offer this service but, no longer does. I've been on a wild goose chase trying to find someone. I've found a few companies that refinish frames but, only in bulk (100+ at a time).:hammer:

Look in EYECARE BUSINESS , July 2002 issue. Good article telling you how to do it yourself, simple instructions. Title of article: Fix and Fit by Alex Yoho, ABOM. Large article title:
    Soldering , Finishing the job.

    Chip

P.S. I have also seen a few adds in some trade magazines from people that will do this for you. Don't recall what magazines at the moment.

    Hi hip chic,

Frame refinishing involves lots of process and can be very expensive includes coating removeal, plating striping, metal soldering, metal polishing, metal cleaning, metal plating, coloring by spray painting or dipping.....very time consuming.

I can show you step by step with photo pitures after Silmo show, France, if you are interested.

The equipment is not very expensive. You will get your money back within 10 pairs of practice.

Thanks for the information and your offer.
Frame refinishing is not something I am asked about very often.
I currently have one customer with two pair of glasses that he would like refinished.
I think I will try to do this myself...just by repainting the frame as described in 20/20 magazine. The customer realizes that this is temporary and the results may not be perfect...he is willing to take the chance.
    Thanks again.

    Hi Jerry,
I would be interested in offering this service, but I haven't found any source for equipment that does a very good job. Any info you could provide would be welcomed.

    Hi varmint,

Frame finishing involves soldering, metal polishing, plating and coloring.

I am going to skip the soldering for now because it is another world.

Polishing--Polishing machine, rough polishing wheel (yellow cloth) , fine buffing wheel, rouge compound are available from: www.riogrande.com

Plating--Three basic colors you need. Nickel, chrome, and gold.
10-amp rectifier, stainless anode, nickel anode, nickel plating solution, chrome and gold solution, beakers with instruction are also available form www.riogrande.com

For spray painting. Please contact House of Kolor. Tel: 612-729-1044. They offer vedio and reading instruction for all necessary equipments and teach everone who is interested at spray painting. Of course, you also need a clean room + a big air compressor.

Color Pigment to mix with paint is available from: Rohm and Haas Company. 1-800-23color. At least 3 colors you need to begin with.

I will try to give more illustration after I arrive Hong Kong. Talk to you later.

    Hi,

The optical trade show in Hong Kong is almost dead this year!! There are more venders than visitors.

Only one new interesting machine is introduced to optical market-----laser welders by Elettronica Valseriana, Italy. Costs $2,7000 Euro. It will weld anything without solder even titanium!!!

    detail information available at:

    www.evlaser.com

Samller paint booth in table size is also available nowdays for custom jobs as low as $300. It comes with air filter, vaccume...etc. Air brush paint guns with container for spray painting is charged extra. The manufactures suggests to use two part component polyurthe paint to mix less than 10% of color pigment to ensure the durability. Only three colors are primary: Yellow, blue, and red.

    Yellow + blue = Green.
    Blue + red = purple.
Yellow + red = Orange (copper).
Yellow + red + blue = brown or bonze.

I would spray a clear coat over the frame first and then apply another color coating in order to ensure the best adhesion. Set it air cool dry for at least 24 hours. Practice more on color mixing will improve color matching. I know there is a gentleman in CA. would do frame refinishing for a reasonal price. Please contact Andy at: 626-705-6039.

If you need any assiatance, please contact me at:

    Good Luck

If you people would do a little more market research, easy to do on the internet, find products that for example prevent the problems that you know want to fix, the world would be a lot easier.

There are products on the market that provide a total seal on your frame which is permanent for many years.

You can prevent oxidation, delaminmation all the goodies that come along the way by easy in house application of a protecting siloxane coating on the frame when it is new and you will never look for re-finishing anymore.

    Se details at http://optochemicals.com/products/info_frame_protec.htm
