    Systems for Ophthalmic Dispensing

I posted in a different category but didn’t get much response...

Does anyone know if there is a big difference between the 2nd and 3rd editions of Systems for Ophthalmic Dispensing?
There is a hundred dollar difference between the two and I’m wondering if I can get away with the 2nd.

I've had both. The third Ed. has more up to date information (ANSI, coatings, etc...) and prettier pictures. Both cover the critical information equally well.

You could get away with either.

If you read and absorbed even part of the info covered, you would be far ahead of most schlubs in this business!

I see at AbeBooks, a $70 difference. I suggest biting the bullet. You probably blow more money on pizza and beer a year to even worry about it.

Are you attending any of the 2 schools in WA, if so that would be better answered by the instructor as you will be using it for a minimum of 2 years.

To me there's a big difference between the 2nd and 3rd. The 3rd just feels more informative and an easier read.

In addition to updated content, the third edition divides the book into two distinct parts: 1) ophthalmic dispensing, with an emphasis on frames, fitting, and adjusting and 2) ophthalmic lenses, with an emphasis on optics, multifocals, absorptive lenses, and lens design.

The latest edition sells for $125 on Amazon.com, which is actually cheaper than the vast majoirty of the college textbooks that my two children had to buy this year. The second edition is now out of print though, so you may find used copies for less.

Whether or not the latest edition is worth the extra money will really depend on how much money you have available to spend on educational materials like this. Although the third edition represents an improvement with updated information, the third edition saw fewer revisions than the second edition, which had a major overhaul from the first edition.

    Best regards,

Thanks all! I think the 3rd sounds like it might be a little more user friendly... bummer I was hoping to save a little bit.

The good news is that it is really one of the only books on ophthalmic dispensing that you will ever need to buy!
