DOs that complete a traditional Ophthalmology residency are fully qualified in that field, which I suspect is the case. I have a local Ophthalmologist close to me who is a DO. Today Osteopathic Medicine is on par with traditional Allopathic medicine and compete for the same residency programs around the country. This is common knowledge today, and you can legally fill that Rx, what ever that means. Are you going to fit the patient, or sell them a box of soft lenses?
this pt had an rx for contacts that stated good for 12 refills....so just sell some c/l...as far as I can determine this is a DO who's specialty is emergency care..
If not a qualified specialist in Ophthalmology, you can still fill the Rx, but he or she will face some issues with the medical board, if discovered. Just as allopathic physicians cannot do this, the same medical board covers DOs.
We had a local urologist write a script of his wife (a patient of ours) for us to fill. He made one error in the spelling of the CL type, so we couldn't fill an RX for a CL that did not exist. It was for the old WJ D2LT he spelled it D2LY.

In this state, any MD or DO can write a spectacle or contact lens RX without any pre-qualification or specialty training. I know 2 MD's that have gone into Optometry so to speak, without being Ophthalmologists.
You don't need to feel compelled to take a hit on a Dr's change on an rx written by a doctor who is neither an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
