    Size of an OD Office

    Hi,

What should be the minimum size of an Optometrist's Office to refract patients?

    Thanks!

8x10 is a nice size, I've seen as small as 7x8 but at that size you may have accommodation play a factor in your refraction of the pre-presbyopia patients.

Ten feet is not an adequate length. By the time you put the exam chair somewhere on the floor, the patient is sitting more like eight feet from the chart.

To quote Betty White "depends". If you are using standard equipment, the room should be at least 12' in length. If you are using all the new uber computerized stuff...the average broom closet will do.

Exactly! With the new flatscreens you can calibrate for any room size.

are you buying new equipment or used? Will you be inserting punctal plugs? refracting children (with their parents sitting in)? will pre-testing have its own room? Will a sink be in the exam room? or external?

Think outside the "box" as well, I ran into this for a small lease-space that we were looking at. Try coming up with some "L" or wedge shaped rooms that maximize the lane portion while at the same time minimizing the wasted space in a traditional rectangular shape.

10 feet is fine if you use a mirror. I installed a 19" monitor on the wall with a pc based acuity software and a mirror on the wall 10 ft or so away. Easy as can be and a true 19 or 20 ft eye chart distance.
