    Is Steampunk making a comeback?

I was just surfing trial lens sets on ebay and a lot of the stuff is tagged as 'steampunk'. Anybody see a flux, or need, in their area of post-apocalyptic eyewear(can't believe i just typed that...)? I think we fit a german baron-type pt. about 20+ years ago w/ a monocle, but other than that, the business is slow.

i would'nt say its a comeback, but it is getting increasingly popular. as an Enforcer for Penny Arcade Expo East and West i see a lot of Steamkids, for years there has been a strong presence of steampunk cosplayers. visit ANY geeky expo (comicon, origins, dragoncon, fearcon, Pax, just to name a few) and you will be blown away by the steampunk community. and with cosplay becoming more popular we may see a rise in the wierd goggles. i have done 2 pair of rx steampunk accessory goggles and one monocle in the last year and a half. granted that was south of the wall (lower 48) but i have had a few of the anchorage rats ask me about doing something like that for them aswell.

I just recently learned about steampunk as décor thanks to HGTV but I never knew it was an eyewear style....that's what I get for living in Mayberry

I had a patient select a frame last month primarily because he thought it had traces of steampunk design.

I don't think steampunk ever really faded away. I've been using embroidery designs from Urban Threads for a few years now. www.urbanthreads.com Some of the designs are really great!

A subculture that is fascinated with the concept of combining elements of Victorian aesthetics and manners with modern day technology. Think leather top hats, corsets worn with military boots, jewelry designed to look like gears/cogs, etc.

I've told my office that the trial lens glasses would go over really well amongst certain subcultures. All I've ever gotten were "Oh, really?" and eye rolls/sarcastic smiles. Apparently, in our corner of the world, subcultures do not exist.

As far as cosplay goes, think it's got to be the most asthetically appealing kind. I'm not a cosplay kind of gal, nothing against it, it's just not my scene. I think, done well, and with true regard to Victorian style, it's quite intriguing. Much better than Furries in my opinion. Not that I'm here to judge.....

I'll admit to not having seen "Beyond Thunderdome" or "Road Warrior," but if they're at all like Mad Max, that's not quite steampunk. The presentation of technology in steampunk fiction incorporates modern technology into Victorian technology with Victorian aesthetics. Think blimps, souped-up turn-of-the-century cars, etc. Mad Max is rooted firmly in a 20th century world with some "throwback" stuff. The only really steampunk thing about MM are the proliferation of goggles.

Yeah, I would say that Steampunk is probably how Jules Verne imagined the future to look, or at least, people into Steampunk and familiar with Victorian culture believe this to be so. Well, the people who actually know who the hell Jules Verne is, which I unfortunately assume is a small number.

If not the future, it's probably what he saw when he closed his eyes at night.

Speaking of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, I present to you the greatest cover of a Tina Turner song of all time:
