So my Kid wants to be an optician...

Yep you read that right. She's looking in the Winchester VA area. She's been studying, is already signed up to take the NOCE, comes from good opticianry stock, ;) has access to a mentor and an extensive optical library, and has no bad optical habits (or experience).
Who wants the opportunity to formally apprentice her?

Because I didn't get to make her decisions for her. Otherwise...

Wants to be an Optician? Isn't there a 12 step program to cure that?

In virginia, you have a J Sargent Reynolds in Richmond and another school in Norfolk, VA. Join the Navy and She can be an optican at the Optical Lab in Yorktown, VA (It would be great to tour, it's big and a great eyeopener) or work at clinics worldwide.

Would you believe I know instructors in both of those schools, as well as several others? I'm a former Army optician myself.
If I could convince her to pursue formal schooling, I sure would, (I've tried) and it'd probably be in something that pays better and has a more positive future outlook for job security. I can't make her decisions, I can only advise and assist.
As for joining the Navy or Army, I wouldn't recommend that option for my kids considering what I see from today's military.
I have long been a proponent of formal education, especially in opticianry and have been active in supporting such. It pains me that this situation is what it is.
Let's get this thread back on track. Does anyone know of any decent positions (willing to train) open within a 20-30 mile drive of Winchester VA?
