Hello All. My name is Bill and I am new to both the board and the world of optics. I currently work as a dispensing optician and optical sales at a small scale corporate eyecare center.

I am in my last year in college earning a bachelors degree in marketing and have been an optician for less than a year.

Since I've been researching the optical field, I have seen many new inventions (machines, Ipad apps) that seem to eliminate the need for opticians. For example, I've seen advertisment for machines that measure seg. height and auto-refractions for patients without having to speak to an optician.

I find the field very interesting, and I hope to make it a potential long term career path. I've been told by other opticians that I should consider becoming an optometrist instead of an optician.

Just wondering what the consensus is on the future of opticians.

For the record, I absolutely LOVE my job; I actually enjoy going to work.
