Except that DA2014 isn't the one that hit Russia. That was a previously unknown bit of space debris (@ 10 tons, its pretty small in the big picture of things)

I don't believe the main body impacted land- probably vaporized in the atmosphere, although a few pieces might have dribbled down to earth.

Today's "near hit" (thanks to G. Carlin) may be related to yesterdays event in Russia, possibly a captured object, although it could just be a coincidence.

Several reports indicated a crater anywhere from 100 to 500 feet in diameter. It will be interesting to watch the news tonight.

I think this story is pretty damn cool. The last one to land in Siberia was in 1908. The vegetation in the are still has not fully recovered and the place still reads a bit radioactive. The meteor crater in Winslow Arizona to me is super awesome and impressive.
We were in Cancun area last May and by looking at the damage to the land and boulders small as cars misplaced and boulders large as houses if not larger split in half.......oh my you have to agree that something happened there a long time ago. Just some really damn cool crap I think

Lol. I actually just had to google Niven. I didn't know he was the auther. The book was really good. Even if you aren't a fan of 'survalist fiction', it was just a good story.

Yep. With Niven, the people comes before the science (fiction).

If you like SF, he's got his own "universe" that he writes in and has quite a few books and short stories, the most famous being Ringworld.

If you like military SF, David Weber's Honor Harrington series, currently at 14 books plus spin offs, and John Ringo multiplicity of series are also good.

Speaking of Niven: A hot topic here lately has been lane splitting by motorcyclists, reminding me of "The Mote In God's Eye", and the indifference to traffic rules because the Browns (and we) are the ones who have to deal with it.
