    petzval lens

    Hello all!
I have a patient asking me to help them build a
petzval lens. After some research I have actually figured out what this is and would like to help this kid out. Anyone out there ever built one of these?

here's a link to info regarding this type of lens. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petzval_lens

    Thank you

This is a project well beyond the skill set of an ophthalmic optician.

Why doesn't he purchase one (or it's equivalent) ready made on ebay http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trks...at=0&_from=R40.

The cost of fabricating one would be well in the thousands of dollars.

Why would it necessarily cost so much?

Essentially, from the Wikipedia diagrams, it seems to be constructed from two bi-convex lenses and two ordinary lenses. The casing would be the biggest issue, but I'm sure something suitable could be manufactured... and apertures are easy to get hold of.

    Is there something I'm missing?

That's a word I haven't heard in a while. A telescope manufacturer by the name of William Optics incorporated one in the design of one of their telescopes. Have fun with it!

Yeah, and Williams copied it from the pioneer in this design, my old firm, Tele Vue Optics.

Google Tele Vue Genesis, MPT Telescope or Televue 127.

Kevin, it can be done and fairly cheap, but you are going to lose accuracy and the chromatic abbe is going to be really played up at the distances these lenses are going to be set from each other so stick with CR39 as a good base material and choose your other material based on the parameters you need for the doublet.

Keep in mind that you are going to have to be flexible on base curves and tolerance or the fabrication cost is going to skyrocket, but it's very doable. E-mail me if you need some formulas and/or thoughts on how to approach this problem.

Forgot about the NP (Nagler Petzval) line of scopes from TV. If I ever got back into the hobby an NP127 is probably what I would go for.

Care to clarify this statement? NP = Nagler Petzval, so the NP 127 is a Petzval design by Al Nagler.

Barry, go to TV's website click on the telescopes tab then click on the NP 101 button then click on background. It's clearly notated on the site that NP stands for Nagler/Petzval. The NP series are based on the MPT design.

YES, NP is an enhanced Petzval design by Mr. Nagler.

Sorry Clinton. I think the confusion must stem from the absence of the word "Don't" in front of your statement:

(Don't) "Forgot about the NP (Nagler Petzval) line of scopes from TV. If I ever got back into the hobby an NP127 is probably what I would go for. "

    Yes?
